Locomotive Engineer Trainee

JOB DESCRIPTION: The locomotive engineer position involves the operation of locomotives, trains, performing pre-trip inspections and tests, monitoring track conditions during the run, controlling train speed by throttle adjustment and brake application, and ensuring the safety of passengers and equipment.

The locomotive engineer is also responsible for handling emergency situations involving the repair of equipment.

This position requires a strong knowledge of train operating rules and regulations.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Locomotive engineer candidates will participate in an eighteen (18) month training program.

Ability to commit to memory large quantities of information that is used daily in decision making and train operating.

After becoming a locomotive engineer, you will be required to pass yearly examinations that test your knowledge of operating rules and other aspects of information required to successfully continue in your position.

New locomotive engineer graduates are usually assigned to work the "extra list" before being able to hold a regular assignment.

New employees must work assignments with odd hours, or work the "extra list" with assignments and locations changing daily.

You may be working the "extra list" for a minimum of two years before you can hold an assigned job. The railroad is a (24) hour operation.

Must be able to work in a variety of conditions (i.

e., fog, rain, snow).

After the completion of the training program the nature of the locomotive engineer position may require that he/she work one train, such as the rush hour train, have a period of time off, then work the next train that is scheduled to leave.
