Description: The primary role of this position will be to act as a subject matter expert and gather requirements, document processes and workflows and help select /develop/implement state of the art interoperable software applications to support biomedical research.

The Sr. Applications Specialist is expected to have expertise in clinical/genomic research data and informatics.

S/he should have thorough knowledge of the scientific technology and analytical routines and possess leading edge abilities.

S/he will conduct multiple analysis, support and/or project efforts of medium to high complexity in collaboration with project managers, architects and developers.

S/he will participates in and guide the design, development, testing, implementation, and on-going support and maintenance of new and existing applications and systems and may lead and organize the work of other resources.

The Sr. Applications Specialist will work in collaboration with the business owners, stakeholders, user community, vendors, and Partners IS to align his/her efforts with enterprise or large organizational strategic and operational goals and initiatives.

S/he will be able to bring the most complex problems to resolution.

S/he proposes, maintains, and enforces policies and procedures relating to these systems and applications.

The ideal candidate should also be able to participate in writing clinical research informatics grant applicationsDescription: - Manages biomedical informatics initiatives within the context of the larger environment including competing priorities, staffing levels, budgetary concerns.

- Develops Informatics strategies and solutions that comply with Partners IS standards and strategic directions.

- Demonstrates extensive knowledge of clinical research and genomics workflow and incorporates it into design, implementation, support, and enhancements of biomedical informatics applications.

- Reporting to the Director of Clinical Research Informatics and commonly partnering with project manager(s) drive project(s) to successful completion, leveraging in-depth knowledge of the biomedical informatics domain that is used to provide the solution.

- Serve as liaison between user community and Partners IS, insuring the proper planning, communication, and coordination of all efforts.

- Without formal management responsibility, may lead 5 or more resources in a highly matrixed way on multiple support/project/analysis efforts.

Assigns/delegates assignments as appropriate.

Provides direction and guidance to team members to facilitate timely and quality results.

Fosters a positive team environment through leadership and mentoring.

- Serves as escalation point for end-user issues if needed.

Provides appropriate and timely problem escalation reporting (and potential solutions if applicable) to IS and/or hospital management.

- Translates business specifications to technical requirements- Creates project/systems/application/workflow documentation as needed- Independently creates and executes test plans- Prepares written materials for use in presentations, meetings, etc. May present to groups of all sizes within IS, the user community, or other groups.

- Provides performance evaluation feedback to the direct supervisor(s) of team members.

- Pursues opportunities for self-development- Stays current with industry trends as they relate to job responsibilities; able to incorporate impact of industry trends into how systems are designed, tested, implemented, and supportedQualifications: - Must have a Bachelors degree in life sciences/computer science/bioinformatics with proven record of managing clinical and or translational cancer research; PhD preferred- Familiarity with caBIG and i2B2 preferable but not required- Thorough understanding about clinical and genomic data required- 8+ years of biomedical informatics/related experience- Knowledgeable about all aspects of software development life cycle- Expert level analytical, systems support, informatics, or technical domain knowledge- Able to identify complex problems, their probable causes, their impact on operations, report them to the appropriate parties, offer possible solutions, and decide on the optimal course of action; Proven track record of successfully solving complex problems across diverse departments- Demonstrated expertise in achieving consensus in highly charged arenas, and able to work collaboratively and effectively with people from all organizational levels and build consensus through negotiation and diplomacy- Experience with related software application project implementations inclusive of design and development and/or selection, software testing, user training, go live, and management of enhancements and upgrades- Understands the flow of data through complex architecture- Demonstrates extensive knowledge of business process and workflow, and is able to incorporate into the support and enhancement of applications- Can coordinate and complete multiple complex tasks to completion independently- Must possess exemplary analytical abilities- Demonstrates ability to prioritize tasks with an appreciation for critical paths- Able to self-manage, assuming full ownership of overall outcomes from start to finish- Demonstrates comfort facilitating group efforts towards a successful completion of goals- Able to understand the political climate of the organization and act accordingly- Able to delegate tasks appropriately- Able to independently conduct meetings, both informal and formal- Able to independently create complex test scenarios and test scripts and execute testing accordingly in an integrated environment while incorporating quality management concepts- Able to coordinate system implementation including needs analysis, user set-up, training, and day-to-day support with an appreciation for budget implications- Leadership skills and ability to develop/present strategic ideas to senior management, executives, symposiums and seminars required.
