Nurse Supervisor / RN SupervisorMAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsible for coordination of nursing activities necessary to meet patient and unit needs during assigned shift.


Keeps nurse manager informed of nursing workload, changes in patient/employee needs, and other problems.


Is aware of unit related incidents during shift and acts as liaison and refers to nurse manager/off-shift nursing coordinator as appropriate.


Monitors all nursing personnel.


Coordinates orientation schedule and assignments for orientees assigned to respective unit.


Assists clinical preceptor in teaching nursing staff defined competencies.


Collaborates with nurse manager in defining nursing standards, practices, and educational needs of patient and nursing staff.


Facilitates communication between multidisciplinary team members.


Provides immediate discipline for milieu staff as necessary.


Makes recommendations to nurse manager and/or his/her designee in regard to further disciplinary action.


Performs other duties as assigned by the nurse manager, including coverage of the floor as needed.


Participates in and maintains efforts to support Joint Commission standards and certifying agencies.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Work is of medium demand, walking and standing for several hours at a time.

Some lifting and ability to perform physical intervention may be required.

Clear visual acuity required to assess patient status and to utilize teaching materials.

Normal hearing required to assess patient status.

ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Usual working environment found on acute patient care units.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Under the general supervision of the nurse manager, functions within established policies and procedures.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Provides functional supervision for all nursing personnel on assigned shift.

Provides functional supervision for new employees in assigned nursing practice.

May participate in functional supervision of other nursing staff in learning advanced skills and techniques.

Supports team building concept within nursing staff.

Collaborates with the nurse manager in implementation and evaluation of primary nursing and quality assurance and all educational activities on assigned unit.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Current registration to practice professional nursing on the Commonwealth of MA
Two to three years of psychiatric care and/or related nursing experience.


Collaborates with multidisciplinary team regarding clinical issues of patient care.


Demonstrated leadership experience.


Demonstrated understanding and ability to apply nursing process.


Demonstrated ability to practice primary nursing in area of clinical specialty; to function independently; to problem solve; to make decisions; to communicate effectively; both verbally and in writing; to cope effectively in stressful situations.


Demonstrated ability to guide, direct, and counsel milieu staff and to function effectively as a clinical role model for nursing staff.
