Medical Records Abstractor, Sr Job in Atlanta, Georgia US
JOB DESCRIPTION: Screens pathology reports, hospital discharge summaries, diagnostic indices and other documentation to identify patients with specific disease diagnoses.
Abstracts statistical data (typically abstracts data for one or a limited number of specialties) such as demographic, diagnostic, epidemiologic, therapeutic and survival information from patient records.
May code and stage the primary site, morphology and extent of disease of each case.
Reviews patient records for follow-up needs and documents evaluations.
May contact and visit area hospitals, treatment centers and laboratories to identify specific patients and abstract data.
Maintains databases and designs and generates statistical reports.
Performs quality control of chart processing, notes errors or omissions and refers them to the appropriate individual.
May verify patient status and billing information.
May provide direction to other medical record abstractors.
Performs related responsibilities as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A high school diploma or equivalent and three years of medical records abstracting experience, OR an equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
Positions within this classification may require certification as a Tumor Registrar.
DATE CREATED/MODIFIED/REVIEWED: 02/22/07 AMM Preferred Qualifications Applicants must have experience with a wide variety of medical terminology or demonstrate the ability to learn.
Will be required to create, maintain and manage data using Microsoft Excel.
The nature of differing medical records and systems requires someone who is adaptable.
Speed, accuracy and attention to detail are high priority characteristics.
Must have reliable transportation.
Additional Job Details Abstractor will work with The Georgia Lupus Registry team reviewing and collecting data relating to CDC funded lupus public health surveillance project.
Work will be conducted both in field and in office.
