Mechanical Designer- Advanced Design SpecialistDescription: This positions primary role is to design and generate detail drawings of piece parts and assemblies, of flight hardware and ground support equipment.
Additional responsibilities include managing data in a product lifecycle management system.
Responsibilities: Candidates will design and generate detail drawings of piece parts and assemblies, of flight hardware and ground support equipment, for various space programs.
Candidates must be able to brainstorm initial concepts and participate in the ongoing design as necessary.
Qualified candidates will provide expertise in materials, fabrication methods, surface finishes, tolerancing, and load capacities.
One must contribute to the packaging of electronics through an understanding of connectors and shielding electromagnetic interference.
They will generate and maintain mechanical/electrical interface control drawings as well as double-check electrical component heights for potential interferences and perform tolerance analyses.
Additionally, candidates will be using Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system to manage data, submit and evaluate change requests, assign change tasks, sign-off on promotions and revisions, and archive related documentation.
One must coordinate fabrication and assembly efforts with both internal and external resources and fit-check manufactured parts and evaluate their functionality.
Candidates will also keep project lead engineers up to date on project status by preparing presentations and proposal material by generating images and providing information pertinent to the design including weight and tolerances.
Finally, candidates will establish communications with fabrication staff and project engineers to assess fabrication feasibility and to finalize consensus on designs.
Qualifications: - Associate degree in Mechanical Design or equivalent experience at the senior level- Ten years experience with primary responsibility for mechanical design of major components or subsystems.
- Proficiency on Pro/Engineer software.
- Significant design experience on spacecraft structures, instruments, and electromechanical devices.
- Solid understanding of mechanical design principles and the ability to independently perform complex problem solving.
- Expert proficiency in using standard computer applications, common mechanical CAD tools, and the use of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) in communicating design information.
- Ability to multitask on projects as required.
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
