Job Description: The Nephrology Technician is a skilled individual who functions in a support role to the Registered Professional Nurse and other members of the health care team in the Dialysis Unit(s) by providing direct care activities as prescribed.

The Nephrology Technician assumes primary responsibility for all technical devices utilized in the delivery of renal replacement therapies.

The Nephrology Technician also provides direct care to patients receiving renal replacement therapies as delegated by the Registered Professional Nurse and under the direct supervision of him/herself or the attending physician.

Responsible To Clinical Nurse Manager Attending Physician or designee Responsible For Patient care activities and maintenance of equipment as assigned.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities Clinical Practice Obtains and records pre-and post dialysis treatment weight, blood pressure, apical pulse and temperature.

Obtains and records blood pressure and dialysis parameters during treatment.

Reports abnormal values to the nurse.

Cannulates patients with grafts and or fistulas under the supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse or physician.

Reports any unusual findings.

Initiates hemodialysis via AVG and/or AVF under the direction of a Registered Professional Nurse.

Sets parameters for the hemodialysis treatment as follows, after consultation with a Registered Professional Nurse: a.

blood flow b.

fluid removal parameters (calculates transmembrane pressure and sets same) c.

heparinization - pump settings d.

pressure limits Provides constant observation for patients during dialysis as assigned.

Provides emotional support and reports patients' concerns/questions to the nurse.

Lifts, positions and transports patients as necessary.

Terminates hemodialysis via AVG (arteriovenous graft) and/or AVF (arteriovenous fistula) under the supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse.

Assumes total responsibility for management, maintenance, safety and cleaning of all dialysis equipment per established protocol.

Obtains blood specimens as directed.

Assures availability of supplies and equipment at each dialysis station and PD area.

Collaborates with the Materials Coordinator and the Dialysis Maintenance Coordinator to assume adequate equipment and supplies.

Receives and stores equipment and supplies.

Stocks the utility room.

Assures all equipment is in excellent repair.

Maintains a clean, neat work area including the utility room.

Defrosts and cleans unit refrigerators as requested.

Performs errands as assigned.

Performs other tasks as assigned.

Assists in data collection as assigned.

Supports the mission, vision, philosophy and goals of the Department of Nursing and The Mount Sinai Medical center.

Attends ongoing staff development as assigned to maintain appropriate knowledge base and skills.

1. Ability to read, write, understand and speak English and basic math skills in a clear and concise manner.

2. Visual and aural acuity to assess patient with parameters of job responsibilities.

5. Physical stamina and manual dexterity to perform a variety of tasks and skills in area of assignment.

6. Successful completion of the Nephrology Technician Orientation Program offered by The Mount Sinai Hospital.

7. Demonstrates the following minimum requirements: a.

Licensure: None required.

b.

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent required.

c.

Certification Certification by the Board of Nephrology Examiners Nursing and Technology (BONENT) d.

Experience: Experience in Dialysis or other relevant acute care setting preferred.

Work Setting Exposure to a variety of clinical conditions, technologies and environmental settings.
