12 per hour ($37,674 - $58,489 estimated annual) The San Mateo County Transit District serves nearly 100,000 customers each weekday on its SamTrans buses, Redi-Wheel paratransit vehicles, Caltrain commuter rail cars and shuttles, as well as a robust capital program.

This position is designed for two candidates working together in the Office of Public Affairs and the Budgets and Grants Department.

Each candidate will be placed with one of the departments for a period of one year.

They will then rotate, switching places for their second year in the program.

Emphasis will be placed on cross-functional projects, including making presentations to senior management and participating in meetings and other collaborative efforts with partner transit agencies throughout the Bay Area.

A mentor will be assigned to each intern to facilitate learning about the agency and the public transportation industry.

Within the Office of Public Affairs, the Intern will assist with outreach to the general public, decision makers, opinion leaders and community partners; will develop and maintain contact databases; assist with new web-based communication tools, which may include social networking platforms; write for the Agency newsletter; receive certification and participate in the Operation Lifesaver community presentations on rail safety; receive certification in the Roadway Worker Protection program; and assist with legislative research.

While working on Capital Programs in the Budgets and Grants program, the Intern will assist with the preparation of fund programming, grant applications and allocation requests; assist with the monitoring of grant expenditures; provide analytical research on new funding opportunities and existing grant-funded projects; assist with the development of the capital improvement program; assist in the preparation and monitoring of the TA budget; work with the Senior Budget Analyst and Manager, Budgets to establish procedures for the TA budget; act as liaison between Planning, Engineering & Construction and Budgets; assist in the development of a grants compliance program; and coordinate the implementation of process improvements within the Budgets and Grants department.

QUALIFICATIONS: Must have received a graduate degree no more than two years prior to May, 2010 in public administration, public policy, urban or regional planning, business administration or a closely related field.

Must have excellent verbal and written communication, presentation and problem-solving skills.

Must possess a valid California driver's license with a safe driving record.

Experience preparing professional grant applications and quantitative analysis reports is a plus.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite is desired.

Experience with Adobe Creative Suite is a plus.

This is a temporary & grant funded position; that is limited to two years.
