Extension EFNEP Program Assistant (Adult & Youth): North Carolina State University

Minimum Experience/Education: The minimum requirement for employment with the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service (NCCES) is a high-school diploma or equivalent.

Departmental Required Skills: Hertford County is located in rural northeastern North Carolina about 60 miles from the major urban areas of the Virginia areas of Norfolk, Hampton Roads, and Virginia Beach.

There are 3 major towns in Hertford County; Ahoskie, Murfreesboro and Winton.

The county is mostly rural agriculture.

The Public School System and the Roanoke-Chowan Hospital have the largest employee base in the county.

The Community College, Chowan University, Shaw University, and neighboring universities in Northeastern North Carolina and Virginia provide educational training for the workforce.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: Experience working with limited resource audiences; and/or experience with the development, training and recruitment of volunteers is preferred.

Essential Job Duties: This position will be based in Hertford County and will also provide programming in Gates County.

This position is a full-time, 40 hours per week position.

Program Emphasis: The Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP), is a federally funded educational program conducted through the Cooperative Extension Service in every state and US territory.

In North Carolina, EFNEP is administered through NC State and NC A & T State Universities.

For four decades, EFNEP has been helping limited resource youth and families with children learn to eat healthier meals and snacks, make better use of food dollars and reduce the risk of food-borne illnesses.

In collaboration with many organizations through the "Eat Smart, Move More" initiative, NC EFNEP aims to help reduce the rising tide of obesity by teaching youth and families practical skills resulting in changed behaviors to eat smart, move more and achieve a healthy weight.

Adult EFNEP reaches families with incomes at or below the poverty threshold, or families that qualify for federal food assistance programs (WIC, Food Stamps, TANF, Head Start, free or reduced school lunches) when these families have school-age or younger children living in the home.

Pregnant women who qualify for WIC also qualify for EFNEP.

Under the programmatic guidance of the Extension Associate, the Adult EFNEP PA works with clients in small group settings and individually (as needed).

While performing this role the Adult EFNEP PA: *Travels within county, district, and state using personal vehicle.

Personal vehicle required.

*Attends and participates in required overnight, out-of-town training for four non-consecutive weeks.

*Develops and maintains a comprehensive understanding of the role of NCCE as an educational agency.

*Recruits limited resource families with young children who meet the federal eligibility guidelines for participation in EFNEP.

*Instructs eligible families in nutrition education using approved curricula and teaching methods.

*Facilitates the collection of required data and submits reports to Extension Associate.

*Maintains confidentiality of program information.

*Coordinates with collaborating agencies to extend program outreach to eligible families.

*Participates in lifelong learning and professional development by attending meetings, participating in trainings, and other opportunities as designated by the Extension Associate, County Extension Director, District Extension Director and/or State EFNEP Staff.

*Enhances program visibility through marketing and communicating program impacts to local stakeholders and potential participants.

*Promotes educational opportunities beyond EFNEP within Cooperative Extension and partnering agencies to program participants.

*Recruits, trains and utilizes volunteers to assist in program marketing, data collection and program delivery.

*Meets established programmatic standards for performance and impact.

Other Work/Responsibilities: The Adult Extension EFNEP Program Assistant/Associate (PA) has the responsibility of identifying, recruiting and working with diverse audiences, specifically the limited resource.

The Adult EFNEP PA receives direct supervision from the County Extension Director.

Trained in basic nutrition and food safety, the Adult EFNEP PA follows program guidelines for the dissemination of subject-matter content; works with designated audiences; completes, reconciles and submits records and reports; and abides by established policies and guidelines required by State and Federal partners.

Other duties as assigned.

Travel within district may be required.

Necessary Licenses or Certifications: Valid Driver's License and reliable, personal transportation required.

Valid NCDL required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
