Will an Economics degree get me a job in a gaming/technology coorporation?

I will be getting a Masters degree in Economics and I was wondering what are the job opportunites with this type of degree and if I can apply it to the gaming industry or tech industry? Every CEO/Industry Head needs an economic advisor for sales and productivity maximixation. I do not wish to work in banking or politics . . .

There are exceptions, but most master's programs in economics are stepping stones to policy positions or PhDs. Corporations generally prefer MBAs to economic programs. The economics program will focus on the foundations of economic theory, and it will teach you how to analyze data, but it will ignore practical accounting, finance, and management issues important to firms. A large technology company, like Google, has hired economists to work on its auction platforms, but that is a fairly unique role. The chief economist at Google, Hal Varian, has a PhD in economics and is known for his text on Microeconomic Analysis, which is popular among graduate programs.

Another factor to consider is that with a master's degree you will ultimately be competing with PhDs for the same positions (since many econ PhDs enter the private sector). Until you have experience in the field, the companies who are looking for economists are likely to choose the PhD, if the institution is of similar quality.

That said, you might consider a PhD in economics, but before embarking on that journey, I suggest trying to find someone who currently has the kind of job in a technology corporation that you are interested in. Send that person an email. He or she will likely appreciate your interest and will offer a sharper insight on what to do next.

Sure, if you can get into that division. Don't expect there to be many positions available though, but you can still try.

Technically, the answer is yes. With the right motiviation, skills, interest, and know how, you can get a job in any tech/gaming company with any degree. I believe the founders of Bioware (makers of Mass Effect, Dragon Age) have medical degrees. All companies need human resources, finance, accounting, marketing, sales and public relations folks that don't have a background in engineering, computer science, or some science area. However, I don't think that's what you're asking. I think you're asking, "Is this a good degree to get a job in the gaming/tech industry." I think the answer is no to that question. You'll be far better served with an engineering/computer science/tech degree to get into that industry. Or if you wish to be on the business side, finance, accounting, or marketing would be better. Many people get an engineering degree then get an MBA to get a good mix.

Nope. Economists don't know anything about how to maximize productivity or sales. That is not their specialization.

Richard Feyman famously said that philosophy of science is as useful to scientists as ornithology is to birds. The same might be said about how useful economics is to businessmen.

Economists are interested in modeling how people react to incentives in the abstract. Typically their models are useful to only to people interested in heavy abstraction, i.e. the government or very, very large corporations, which are large enough that they might benefit by a model that tells them something about the elasticity of demand of the price for some good. (Financial economics is an exception; some of these models match the world well enough they can be used to help price contracts.)
