What is a good IT career path?

I am currently taking a sabbatical and would like to get some certifications behind my experience. I have worked in the IT field since 2002 when I joined the Marines. Since then I have worked help desk, Geek Squad and various other similar positions.

Right now I am looking to prepare for several exams and would like some input from others as to which exams might suit me best. I am interested in MCDST, MCSE, CCNA just to name a few...

I currently do not have a job. I would like to eventually start my own IT services company doing everything from repair to PC building to network administration. Right now I will settle for something making $15 an hour.

Here are my questions;

Which IT certifications should I pursue and in what order?

What are the best online training courses?

Where could I find jobs starting at $15/hr and which cities? (I live in Houston, TX)

Any and all intelligent responses will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Much love and peace!

I'm not directly answering your question, but I want to offer some thoughts. I really, really caution you against spending all the money on certifications - especially Microsoft certifications. I see a lot of developers who have them, and they've never proven to me that they know anything more than their competition. CCNA I can't comment on, but I believe it's more highly regarded.

If your goal is to start your own company doing IT services, then you're going to need two things:

- knowledge

- customers

Knowledge can be gained a number of ways - and it depends on the way you learn best - it is courses? Is it working with colleagues who can teach you? Find out the best way. Perhaps you can try to get in on the ground floor with a larger company - and have them fund your courses. Then, start picking up some customers on the side - in the evening.

This leads into how do you get customers? That's a hard one. Word of mouth often helps ... ask around, small companies, etc. Once you think you have enough that you can leave a full-time job, you're gold.

Just my two cents of advice ...
