Biomedical Engineers generally either work for a hospital maintaining the equipment (x-ray equipment, diagnostics, etc.), work in industry, typically for a medical device or equipment manufacturer or they work in academia doing research on materials and/or devices. The medical device business is generally the highest paying of the three. The device business is about designing, making and delivering medical device technology so that health care providers (e.g. doctors) have the tools to treat people. For example, pacemakers, catheters, imaging systems, diagnostic equipment, stents, artificial hearts, dialysis machines, artificial joints, and vascular grafts are some of the devices that biomedical engineers help produce. It is not really different than other engineering fields. Engineers develop products and solutions for different environments. BEs just do it for use in the diagnosis and treatment of people and other healthcare situations. BE is a great field. Lots of opportunities to branch into related high paying and rewarding jobs even if you don't like pure engineering. It is also a growth field and is one of the most recession proof areas of the economy.
