Should I remain a .net programmer, or switch to Java?

I'm an experienced .net developer, but I have fallen behind in my skill set.

Because I am a political progressive, I believe that government agencies are largely beneficial to society, while large corporations are primarily harmful. My career has been split between these 2 types of entities, but I have usually been happier and had more success in the public sector.

Because I am practical, I believe that software already is, or is becoming, a commodity. So it seems to me that the only companies that should be making computer software are companies that make computer software as their primary business. Also, I see more and more companies offshoring, or attempting to offshore, programming work.

This drives my question: should I try to switch to Java, or some other platform, or continue as a .net developer? In the little experience I've had with Java, I found it very unpleasant to work in, primitive, unhelpful, needlessly complex. Still, it appears to me that the organizations I want to be a part of are more inclined to use Java because of its lower "hard dollar" costs (for government) and its wider marketability (for software producers). Does anyone have any input on this?

Well, my two cents is that it's always good to expand your skill set. If learning Java would make you more marketable, I'd say go for it.

Learn both if you can! Java is a great language that tends to fill in a different role than .NET. Plus, you make yourself a more valuable asset if you can work with another language. Don't think of learning Java as a zero sum game, you're just increasing your skill set.
