How to get an interview with a consulting firm ( i.e. Deloitte, IBM, etc.)?

Category: Technology

Anon.Anon.

I just graduated from a top 5 U.S. engineering university with my B.S. in Electrical Engineering. I really want to get into IT consulting, so I was looking at some firms. Does anyone with experience know how to land an entry-level interview with a consulting firm, preferably for IT/Technology consulting? What should I say in my cover letter, etc.? I appreciate any help.

I really want to work for IBM, by the way, although another consultancy would be fine by me. I'm on the fence about Accenture though. I know a guy who got a consulting job with Accenture recently, but he only got it because he had a relative who was a higher-up at one of the offices. He said that he got interview questions ahead of time, etc. It seemed pretty unethical. Moreover, this guy was unqualified in my opinion (underachiever, lazy, used to try copy my exams in class, etc.). If nepotism is common fair for landing a job at Accenture, I won't stand a chance because I know no one at Accenture. I am a bit annoyed by this, although I know the world works this way at times.

Step 1) Learn all you can about both the company and the assignment. If it is a major employer and is listed on one of the stock exchanges, there are numerous resources that you can check (for an example, see Resources section). In addition, find out as much about the assignment as you can. Re-read the definition of the position if you received one; and if you can find out about the person with whom you are to meet, all the better. Finally, think about how you will position your past accomplishments so they will apply to the task at hand.

Step 2) Rehearse based on what you found out about the company and the consulting job for which you are being considered. Also, try to anticipate the questions that the interviewer is likely to ask you. Here are a few to get you started: Why do you think you are qualified for this assignment? Describe the three to four major things you did on previous assignments that really made a difference. Tell me how you work under pressure or with deadlines. You should have rehearsed enough so that the answers to these types of questions will take no more than about two minutes.

Step 3) Prepare to ask questions about both the company and the assignment because it will show that you have been listening intently and you really want the assignment. And it is important that you ask provocative questions that require more than "yes or no" answers. For example, ask about what are the most pressing needs of this assignment and what specifically should the person chosen accomplish first. Or ask how the person will be evaluated, and when.

Step 4) Talk with people who either work for that company or have done so in the past. For example, you can contact the alumni office of your college or university to find graduates that are, or have, worked for the company. Find out about how you should dress for the interview and anything else that will enhance your status when you meet.
