How do I get an entry-level server admin job?
I am frustrated with being offered tech support, help desk, desktop support, or phone support-only IT jobs. I really want to work as a entry-level server admin. I have the following certifications: CCNA, Cisco Advanced Wireless LAN Field Specialist, A+, Network+, Server+, Security+, Dell DMS (NON_DSP) Client Softskills, on Windows Server 2003: MCSA, MCSA: Messaging, MCSA: Security, MCSE, MCSE: Messaging, MCSE: Security; on Windows Server 2008: MCTS: Active Directory: Configuration, MCTS: Network Infrastructure: Configuration, MCTS: Applications Infrastructure: Configuration; other Microsoft: MCP, MCTS, MCTS: Microsoft Windows Vista: Configuration, MCTS: Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager, Configuration; MCTS: Business Desktop Deployment, MCTS: Microsoft Forefront Client and Server - Configuration, MCTS: Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007, Configuration. I am currently studying for the Microsoft 70-646: Pro: Windows Server 2008, Server Administrator. I don't have practically any experience with servers, except what I learned in school and from self-studying. What are my options for getting the experience that I need?

And your degree? Your university placement office should help, perhaps with an internship program for new grads. No degree? Your competition has them. Plus experience! There are thousands of laid-off IT workers with every imaginable qualification. Jobs are really hard to find. You're very lucky to have been offered help desk, tech support, etc, positions. Even these jobs have loads of over-qualified IT grads & experienced tech support looking for work. All you can do is take what there is, and keep looking for something better. |
