Do you need a license to be a freelance web designer?

I just started doing freelance web and graphic designing in Edmonton, AB. I have started a website that offers information on the type of designing services I offer plus an online portfolio. Am I required to register for a business license to operate?

This is more of a business question than a careers section. But to my knowledge, the answer is no. You don't have to be a business to operate, though it's strongly suggested you do. You can take cheques that you cash personally, etc., and then claim that as personal income. If you do it as a business, there are other benefits (such as deductions). Then ultimately you can incorporate your business and avoid personal liability. |

If you are an independent contractor or freelancer, you don't need to get a business license. But, if you run a team of designers and you are representing your team as a 'business entity' -- you may apply for a business license. Although many service buyers may not require this when you bid for their projects, it will be a major plus to your credibility on the web. Hope this helps. |
