Computer Science or Game Development degree?

Category: Technology

ShranderShrander

I am interested in both fields, and am wondering which would be a better choice to pursue. I've spent years on computers and games, and have been constantly learning and loving.

The Computer Science degree offered at the college I am enrolled in seems very general, but covers quite a bit.

The Game Design and Development degree focuses on programming, but gives a bit of coverage with modeling, animation, networks, and a few other small bits.

Which would be the one where I would be more likely to land a reliable job not too long after leaving college?

(I am not going to a "top of the line" college, so I wouldn't expect to get a position in any of the huge companies out there.)

Which would be a more enjoyable job?

(I would be fine with the idea of sitting in a room for 10+ hours a day staring at a screen of code, constantly having to rewrite it and make changes.)

The short answer is computer science. Recruiters are more familiar with the standard "computer science" degree, and thus it can land you a job at more places (albeit non-game positions). On the other hand, a "game development" degree is not known by as many people, and many may question if it's a good degree for a non-game development position.

As for the enjoyable job, that's up to you really. Of the few I know that have worked in the game business, most said it's enjoyable, but not necessarily the greatest job on the planet. Remember, for every programmer working on Grand Theft Auto, Halo, or Starcraft, there's 10 or 20 working on Imagine Babyz or crappy movie tie-in titles. I knew a person who worked on the Vin Diesel XXX movie game adaption. He did not find making that game enjoyable.
