Would you give 2 weeks notice at your job, if you thought they would let you go on the spot?

I've been with the company for a little over 5 years, but have found a better job that starts on Aug,4th. If I give a 2 week notice, I'll be out of work for a couple weeks if they let me go on the spot, and I don't want that. The start date at the new job cannot be changed.

It is customary to give 2 weeks notice to an employer when you resign. It is never wise to burn a bridge as you never know when you need to cross it again. It may affect the references given in the future and whether the company reports if you are eligible for rehire.

You should give proper notice. If they walk you out the door that day you know you made the right choice even if they do the wrong thing.

If you are sure you have the other job lined up, give the proper 2 weeks' notice. Tell them that you are looking forward to training in the new person or tying up loose ends of the next couple weeks. If you have anything to hold over them (like you're the ONLY one who knows how to do xy or z) then drag your feet on passing the baton to the next person until the last few days. That way, they won't be able to fire you without it being bad for them.

Great answers! But don't drag your feet, go out on a high note so they will be a great reference in the future. Make a plan to put some money in savings as an emergency fund; start with a goal of $1,000. This way you won't worry about losing 2 weeks pay if you face this situation again.
