Would you consider this reason to quit your job?

So...at work today, I was answering a question the new girl was asking me. I was standing sort of beside my boss, but my back was turned towards him. He was apparently on the phone, and I didnt know it. While answering the new girl, I all of a sudden felt the back of a hand across my back. My boss had back handed me. When I turned around to see what had just happened, he gave me this "go to hell" look and pointed at the phone. When he got off, he said "I didnt mean to hit you that hard, it was supposed to just be a tap. I was on the phone and couldnt hear". I nodded and walked to the back of the building. He never brought up the situation again, and I was too pissed to say anything else about it.

If he had intended to tap me, shouldnt he have turned and tapped with his hand facing down? He didnt though, he hauled off and back handed me! Hard enough to make me take a step forward.

Either way, he has NO right to even lay a finger on me! A simple, "excuse me, Im on the phone" would have been just fine...

What would you do in this situation? Im pissed and dont know how to handle this... Before I go and do something rational, Id like to get someone else's opinion

I would report him to HR. Keep a written record of what happened, when, where, and what was said.

All the best.

EDIT: He has a licensing association. You can talk to them. Given his rep, I highly recommend you do so. You can also contact your local Fair Housing and Employment office.

It depends. Personally, I would just let it go as you don't want any bad blood between you and your manager. That is a career killer and bad blood is what you will have if you report him to HR.

Myself personally, I probably wouldn't put up with someone like that. But that is my opinion. The man seems like a big jerk-- I think you should at the very least write up a report and get it notarized and witnessed.

If someone saw it happen, have them write one too. JUST IN CASE!

You can make copies and file it with a lawyer or good friend.

Protect yourself. Many times, these things get twisted. The man might try and protect himself by finding a way to dismiss you.

I don't mean to scare you, but I have seen doctors throw people under the bus to save their own butts.

His actions were wrong, simple as.

It is up to you whether you want to take it further this time. It depends whether you think he was truly sorry for his mistake and whether you think it is something that is likely to occur again for you or another member of staff. If you consider it a genuine accident and you like your job then I'd let it go this time and carry on as normal. He probably doesn't know how much it has bothered you, so you could try talking to him about how it has upset you, no guarantees on how positively this will go though.

If he's a nice boss in general then maybe it's not worth changing jobs over.

If you want to take it further, find out who you are meant to talk to, obviously no one else in the company as he is the boss and owner but there are other organisations who you can contact.
