What is your accent?

Definitely.

West country accent, England.

I use a fairly well spoken accent in formal situations and around people with different accents so that they can understand me clearly (often called ' very posh' by people from northern England and Scotland I've found but rarely as posh by people from more southern England for some reason). But when I'm around family or friends from my area I'll often become more relaxed and West Country.

In interview situations I will naturally become more 'posh' and I think if it's a front of house position it's good to have a non-regional distinguishing accent, especially if its a ˜nice place.

There's info on this somewhere if you're interested - have you tried the bbc 'voices' website? Lots of info on different UK accents and some world-wide ones and there was a survey done by the BBC at one point that had different accents from all over Britain rated by people as being 'friendly', 'professional' and something else, I think. Though can't find it when I had a quick look just now. I think that 'RP' and Queen's English came top for professional-ness with 'an accent the same as your own' near the top of all the lists. The British Library also has some stuff on UK accents. There's a few articles out there specifically on accents in job situations too - I can't quote where they're from I'm afraid but I think in that one study 'Birmingham' and 'Glasgow' came out the worse in interviews while specifically posh 'RP' and Southern English accents faired badly in Scotland. In a city where the same accent was spoken the results changed.

I don't have THAT strong regional accent anyway although have had people at university guess correctly what area of the country I'm from as soon as I relax into speech a bit. In interviews I get rid of as much of my ˜natural accent as I can because I think it could influence who they perceive. Unfortunately I still say my 'a's with a twang however hard I try not to do it!

Edit: Just realised that this isn't the British Yahoo Answers so my otherwise okay answer is not a bit useless!?... America don't really have a 'class' accent like Britain does with 'RP' (Recieved Pronunciation) I don't think. Basically when I go 'posh' I could be from anywhere in England so I'm less likely to be judged. Personally I think minimising an accent is good for an interview unless it's really unnatural in which case it will sound awful and you'll never keep it up!

As long as your dialect is not present I wouldn't worry...keep it nice and 'Standard English'.

Lol. I wouldn't, no.

I have a Cape Breton accent. It's an island located in Nova Scotia so we almost sound like Newfies.

Anyway, it's not worth trying to have an accent at your interview, because then you'd just have to fake an accent when you got the job, or they'd be asking you what happened to your accent and you'd probably look a little foolish. hah. Good luck with the interview though! :)
