Would you accept a 15% salary pay cut (for the same job) or would you just go on unemployment?

They are changing my contract to a new one -- but the pay will be 15% less per month (roughly $600). I live in NYC and my rent is already roughly 35% of my monthly paycheck.. so $600 would be awful. But is better to say **** YOU and just go on unemployment?

Think about it...employment you get 50% of your wages...keep your job and get 85% of your wages... if you were to go out and find something else if you went on umemployment, your lower salary job would be considered "reasonable employment" because it is within 85% of your current salary. Take the pay cut and keep your eyes open for other, higher paying opportunities. But don't go on unemployment if you don't have to. It's suppose to be a last resort, not a way out because you're upset. Be glad you still have your job, 10% of Americans don't!

You are better to just accept that everyone is having to tighten expenses, including companies and be glad that taking a 15% pay cut is an option.

If you turn down the new contract offer you may find the company fighting your unemployment claim, then you will be earning zero. So, take the work, cut back elsewhere (there is always room for cutting expenses), and look for a second job to make ends meet.
