Why would a job application form ask for my 'number of dependents'?

This is applying to a temp agency for work - why do they need to know whether I've got dependents; I've never had to state that in any other job application?

The purpose is to assess your likely availability and reliability. An applicant with three children and an ailing mother-in-law is more likely to take time off or to be unavailable for an assignment. |
