Why would a job application form ask for my 'number of dependents'?

This is applying to a temp agency for work - why do they need to know whether I've got dependents; I've never had to state that in any other job application?

The purpose is to assess your likely availability and reliability. An applicant with three children and an ailing mother-in-law is more likely to take time off or to be unavailable for an assignment.

It is quite legal to ask this question, provided that it is asked of all applicants and the replies treated similarly. If it is dishonestly used to exclude (for instance) married people or mothers, it is illegal.

It is very bad practice to have that on the form and could be used to discriminate. These questions are sometimes voluntary to answer
