Why is it so hard to get an interview?

I have applied at countless places from clerical support to customer service. My work experience consists of 5+ years of customer service and 2 years of retail. I had to quit my job and move to a different state because of my husband. I am so frustrated because I've applied for so many different postings, with no response. I also applied for 3 different customer service jobs through governmentjobs.com and I haven't heard nothing! I'm in Houston btw & I''ve been actively searching for a job since mid March.

I am right there in the same boat as you. I have applied at countless jobs for IT.

I was told when a job is listed online or in the newspaper the company can expect to get 300+ applications and resumes for the opening. A lot of companies are not actually reading the resumes or applications. they use software that scans it for keywords that match the profile for the position. Then from that it chooses X amount of top applications to pass along to a human.

What has worked for me recently is checking online for job descriptions that I am applying for and finding a way to position the keywords in the skills/responsibilities/experience section of my resume or application. After doing this my phone has been a little more busy. I still have not landed the dream job but I am getting closer.

Change your resume - it's obviously not working for you.

ask yourself this question: at each of my previous jobs, what have I done that demonstrates that hiring me either saved money for the company I was working for or made that company more money?

If you can, quantify how much money was saved/gained.

So, instead of:

I can type 35 wpm, say "I used my typing skills to encourage my manager to move all the typing work in house, thereby saving the cost of $400/month by not having to use the outside typing firm."

Note: Not all jobs that you will have done will have this feature - cuz humans go in to a job to do it, not to think about money, but one example would be better than none at all.

Next, for all those jobs that don't have one of these examples, at least list what your greatest accomplishment was while you were there. What did the company get extra by hiring YOU as opposed to any other Joe Shmoe.

Finally, keep track of where you've applied and try to follow up each application with a pleasant phone call about 1 week after the application where you ask for feedback. Almost no one will give it, but you don't get what you don't ask for... and besides, following up makes it look like you care about the job.

Since you have customer service/retail experience, many people from ages 15 and up have the same type of experience (even if it's not extensive like yours) so therefore you have A LOT of competition. You can try to make your resume and cover letter look better. Just keep applying and don't give up.
