Why don't they give me the schedule I want?

Category: Other

I got hired at American Eagle. I'm 18. I told my manager i want to work monday through friday. 2-10:30. full time basically. and I just called to see what my schedule was for the week and a coworker told me it was ONLY monday from 5-10:30.

I feel like im being annoying because i keep calling my manager and reminding him that im available for full time. THATS WHAT I WANT.

what can I do to get them to let me work full time?

"THAT'S WHAT I WANT". I hate to break it to you, but as strange as this may seem, you are there to do them a favor, not the other way around. Employees like people who are willing to do whatever they are asked. In your case they are just asking you to work on one day. The best way to get more hours is to quit asking for them but to be the absolutely best employee you can. Constantly stay busy, do things that need to be done before you are asked. I.e, even the yucky stuff like cleaning the bathrooms, mopping the floors etc. If someone can't work or calls in sick, jump at the chance to work their hours, even if it is not on the day or time you want. This is what will impress your boss.

It's called "paying your dues" and most of us have to go through it meaning it may be years before we can actually get the days and hours we want.

I had the same problem when I was younger. I suggest you look for another job, because they won't give you the hours. They might not have any to give.

Welcome to the world of no jobs, short hours and low pay. If possible, take whatever hours you can get and prove yourself. If he sees you are an excellent worker, on time, efficient he may increase your hours. It is just really tough right now in some occupations to get full time with all the cutbacks. Take it and run with it..good luck!!!!

LOL! Grow up, kiddo. Remember the phrase, "It's the economy, stupid"? Better refresh your memory fast. Retail sales are dropping again, and you're lucky you still have 5-1/2 hours of work this week. Next week, you might not get any. If you don't wise up and stop acting like a 4-year-old in a temper tantrum for not getting your way, you are not going to have any job at all.

Put yourself in the employer's shoes. They want to try to hang onto people in hopes of a recovery. They cannot afford unemployment, either. Any employee who gets snippy, however, is another stressor the employer will gladly dispense with. Pay attention to the news, including the business & financial news. Your job depends on it. Your life may well depend on your becoming a whole lot smarter really fast, too. This is the start of the Second Wave of the Greater Depression. Wise up.

Any job that goes on 24 hours a day is going to have odd hours to work. Frankly, I'm surprised they even hired you if you were clear about the hours you could or would work.

It takes YEARS of seniority to be able to pick and choose your working hours in jobs like this. If you can't work the hours they need they're only going to give you the few you can work. That translates to a shift every now and then.

I don't think you can change the employer, you need to consider your work availability or find another job.
