Why doesn't my manager allow me to talk to customers?

I work at McDonald's. I NEVER talk to my co-workers unless I am asked of something or I'm serving customers. I'm known as the quiet girl.

When the opportunity arises (which is very very rare). A customer asks where my accent is from and they chit chat while they're handing me money or I'm getting their order.

I feel RUDE if I give them one answers and go on and do my business. So I make it seem like I'm interested, but I NEVER engage in conversation for more than a minute.

It usually isn't busy when this happens and other registers are available.

However, my manager interrupts me and they give me this stern look as if I'm wasting their time.

What am I doing wrong?

As long as the work is being done and you are not being rude to a customer your boss has no right to treat you in this way. Firstly you need to establish if he treats others in this way, if he doensnt then you should challenge his behaviour in a constructive manner and preferably with a witness?

Do you have a Trade Union in your workplace? If so Join them they can always help you.

As long as all customers are being served, you're not doing anything wrong and your manager is a moron.

Ask him about company policy first. If you don't get a satisfactory answer then ask someone superior to him if what you're doing is wrong. If it's not governed by any corporate policy, then you're cool.

Here's a way of being brief without being rude.

"I'm from the country of _____, which is located ______. My family arrived here _____, and we love it in this country. Please forgive me, but I have another task that I must attend to right now. Please come again."

I agree with o.0 Your manager is a moron who obviously has no idea what customer service means. Keep being friendly and polite. I bet in ten years time you will be in a very good place and your manager will be exactly where he is now. Maybe you'll be his boss.

During your training period, I believe your manager should have told you the Standard Operating Procedures ( SOP) and the work culture of your organization.

If you are unsure of what you are suppose or not suppose to do, the best way is to clarify your doubts with your manager.

Peace to u. Hope u are fine. U seem to have a good heart. Still, there are some unwritten habits in business like malls. The reason why most employees are not talking too much might be because if u get used to talking like that, someday u might get used to it and maybe, make a mistake. Humans tend to be like that. It is better to be polite too. At the same time, try and let it be short so that ur manager also accepts it. U might want to talk to that manager a little just to be on his good books too. If he tends to get on the wrong path then be vary of him and share ur feelings with a good friend. Hope that helps. Take care.
