Why does it matter if you've had gaps in your employment?

I've had periods where I spent more than a year out of work. Why should I have to explain what I was doing during those times on a job application?

I had my reasons for being unemployed for long periods (personal reasons). What are gaps supposed to indicate?

It really does matter because how they will know what you were doing in that period. You can't have proof of that gap. Second thing is for employer it is not good to have a person who is out of job for such a long period.

Because this really decrease the ability to work and to bear the stress of work. It really does. So they are little worried over this issue.

Employers are looking for employees they can count on to stay with the company for the long term.

Past gaps are asked about to give the employer an indication of likely you are to stick around. In other words, if you can't explain your "personal reasons" for quitting or being fired from a previous job, a prudent hiring manager can only assume that personal reason may surface again.
