Why do friends/associates forget what I do for work isn't equivalent to regular wage job?

Currently I am laid off, no surprise the economy is pretty well pwn3d. Without inflicting the details, I am a professional in what I do for work, something one has to study and earn a college degree to legitimately perform.

However, in casual conversation with friends and acquaintances when the subject of work, or the lack thereof and my search for more comes up all they can say is "Oooh, ooooh, I saw this store/fast food place/retail establishment that is hiring..." like some $10 an hour job is going to be any good for me vs. what I normally take in in what I do. They also forget unemployment is calibrated on what you made at your former jobs so if I got on at some store job that would sink my averages and when I was out of work again my weekly UB would be markedly less. Why don't people get it, its not as simple as they want to imagine it is.

If your friends don't make $20 to $25 an hour, they aren't going to understand why you're offended by their suggestions. Or, if they've never asked you how much you make, they may not even realize that you are "worth" more, so to speak. And if they've never gone through unemployment before, they aren't going to be thinking in those terms. Before I went through the process, I had no idea that, for instance, taking a minimum wage job might end up with me making LESS per month than if I had just stayed unemployed.

Or maybe if you have been unemployed for a long time, your friends are hinting that it's been long enough and that maybe you should just settle.

No idea because you do not tell us what it is that you do for a living.

*** Quit beating around the bush. If you want to know why people think you are a minimum wage worker, then simply state your job. I'm guessing it is obvious to you why they think this since you are refusing to simply spill it.
