Why can't I get a job (nearly 12 months on JSA and depressed ?

k -k -

I have good GCSE's, 2 A Levels and a BA (Hons) Degree in Graphic Design (which is my chosen career path) Whilst a student I worked in various part time roles, Bar Work, A book shop, A Clothes Shop, A supermarket and an office. So I have a lot of different work experience. I also have undertaken 2 design internships (these were only temporary and no permanent position was offered at the end of them) I apply to jobs relentlessly in all kinds of fields and do not limit myself to just graphic design. I am signed up with all my local temp agencies but they dont seem to be able to find me anything. Unfortunately I live in a small remote area and I cannot drive, I cannot afford to learn to drive until I have a job and I definitely cannot afford to move out. So I am stuck in a catch 22. Volunteer places are even full in my area and cost money I do not have to get to. On occasions when I get interviews I am always told that I interviewed well, sounded like I prepared for interview and seemed very motivated but someone had more experience. Thats when I'm lucky enough to get a reply, some interview me and then just leave me hanging. It is heartbreaking. So much so that I am starting to lose my motivation and I am depressed. I hate being on job seekers allowance, I have no life because I cannot afford to go anywhere and being with my friends upsets me (whilst I know they dont mean to) because they all have jobs and talk about their plans for the future whilst I can't see how I'm ever going to have one) I am out of ideas now.. thanks

This is difficult - there are hundreds of unemployed graphic design graduates out there. Keep going with what you are doing - you are getting interviews and getting positive feedback so you do seem to be going about things in the right way. If you are applying for supermarket jobs as a graduate it is possible that you are getting nowhere as you are over qualified. Stick to jobs that are a better match to your qualifications.

It sounds like you need to apply for jobs further from home - yes you will have to move to take up the job but once you have some proper experience you can look around for something closer to home. Working for a local authority is a good way to get on the jobs ladder - many also have trainee graduate schemes but these are very hard to get. Application forms are very specific for these type of jobs and unless you know how to fill them in you will have no chance - so get help.

Keep trying on the volunteer front - it will get you out of the house and keep up your self esteem and they SHOULD at least pay your expenses to get there and back (some will even cover lunch costs). Good luck (Ps been there myself)

I too live in a small town, and without transport to the nearest major city then employment prospects around here are negligible.

I have found that part-time jobs are more common - you might be able to get a couple of those. It would show initiative and put some proper work experience on your CV. And, of course, it would get you some money to learn to drive or rent a flat/room in a more employable area.

Im familiar with a work-at-home job that is legitimate if you get with the right company. A number of call centers are setting up people as work-at-home agents, either as employees or as independent contractors. Its ideal for someone who wants flexible work hours or who lives in an area with few job opportunities.

The pay is anywhere from minimum wage to great depending on the project youre working on. Customer service usually pays less than sales, and talking with consumers usually pays less than talking with businesses.

Ive included some links below to two companies that I know are reputable. There are also some links that show an outline of the type of customer service or sales skills you would use on the job.

Good luck to you.

You have a couple of good answers here with the exception of the 1st idiot!

Have you tried calling companies from the Internet and using the yellow pages to see if you can get a start somewhere? The local newspapers generally have cleaning jobs and hotel jobs advertised, maybe try one of them to get yourself started.

If you have a caring nature, a lot of care homes will take on people with little or no experience.
