Which job offer should I accept - Oxford or Edinburgh?

I've been offered jobs in both Edinburgh and Oxfordshire for a similar role in two medical healthcare companies. In Oxfordshire the department would consist of the manager (a friend of mine who I have worked with before) and myself whereas in Edinburgh there would be a team of four people. The salary is better in Oxfordshire (£26K) than Edinburgh (£21K but am hoping to renegotiate to £23K) but the cost of living, renting/buying property etc is so much greater in Oxford that I'm not sure which to choose. The company is about 30mins south of Oxford near Didcot. I don't really want to live in a village as I prefer a city lifestyle but I don't think I could afford to live in the city centre whereas I might be able to in Edinburgh. Additionally, I've always wanted to live in Edinburgh as it's my favourite place in the UK but I don't think I can turn down a £5000 a year difference. I think it is also more likely that the Oxford role would offer more opportunity for training/development and promotion/increase in salary. I plan to talk to both companies again tomorrow, esp regarding development and promotion but am looking for any advice/opinions particularly from anyone living in Oxford/Edinburgh. Is it possible to live comfortably on these salaries in these areas? Which location would you choose?

Edinburgh is cheap cheap cheap! You always wanted to live in edinburgh. Sounds to me like you have already made your decision. Edinburgh is a no brainer when the alternative is oxford. Edinburgh is one of the best cities in uk. August festival is immense, good nightlife, friendly people. The income sounds good to me. Get on an easyjet to Edinburgh today, u won't regret it.

Also even id Oxford offers more opportunities u will not b stuck in your job in Edinburgh forever anyway. You should always be on the lookout for new jobs. The average educated person will have a round 15 different jobs in their working life. Go to Edinburgh, enjoy yourself for a while!

I think you've just completely missed a point here - you say that the cost of living in Oxford is so much greater, then you say that you don't want to turn down £5k a year..... You won't get the extra money because you'll be spending it all on rent..... With the finances you need to work it out by looking at the cost of your ideal home in both areas, which isn't that hard and is so obvious.

In terms of the job itself you have to consider your lifestyle and your day-to-day issues, rather than what's on paper. It's fine to say that you want more development and promotion, but if the office itself is boring and slow-paced, or if it's too hectic and stressful, then this will effect how you feel about your future with the company.
