When do you give up hope that a job will call back?

In your opinion, how long should you wait before giving up hope? I'm not talking about waiting around and not applying for other jobs -- clearly, you shouldn't put your job search on hold just because you're interested in one particular position. But how long have you typically waited to hear back from a job you really liked before giving up hope that they'll be calling you?

I'm currently waiting on a job that I want very very much. I made a follow-up contact with them a week ago, got a response saying that they hope to contact me soon, and haven't heard anything since. I think it's too soon to give up hope, but I'm wondering when I should throw in the towel and stop daydreaming about this job.

It depends upon the company and the position, but if you haven't heard back in a month, your chances of getting the job are slim. But not impossible though--sometimes they put the hiring on hold for a while, or a second similar job opens up and they pull out the applications from the people who applied for the first job.

Edit You're doing it wrong BUT you are on the right track! Call them again! Call them now if the time is within business hours. When you call, ask for the manager directly. And then head to the business and try to speak to them in person (the following day of course, unless they ask you to come in on a specific day.)

If you want that job, you have to prove to them you want that job. When you go to the business, bring along a thank you card HANDWRITTEN saying you appreciate them reviewing your application and thanking the receptionist who spoke to you (if you don't remember the name just put the wonderful receptionist) and that you hope that "we can become a team at Business"

edit: When you bring the card, ask if the manager is in to hand it to them personally, if not, ask the receptionist to put them in their mailbox and that you wanted to thank them in person.

That is how I got my job, the thank you note. I was pretty sure I wouldn't have gotten the job if I didn't turn in the thank-you note.

A week isn't that long. i would wait about 2 or 3 of them before i gave up complete hope. however i once applied at a drugstore that called me 5 months after i applied. they actually "kept my resume on hand" as im sure you heard the line from potential employers who are politely saying "we aren't interested in hiring you"

its possible and even liekly that they told you they would contact you soon to be nice, and really have no intention of ever doing so. i was given this runaround at a Quiznos i applied at, the manager kept saying she was going to call me within the next 2 weeks for training, 2 weeks passed, call again, she said 2 weeks again..... never called.... etc

Just went through this...I don't get many interviews but did recently--and well-- offered 1 and accepted although it's not the "one" I truly wanted...now I am worried..anyway..one never called back...one took almost a month! SO.. if it hasn't been quite that long.. hold out a little longer- depends on what all they are doing to get ready to fill the job-- I turned down that one due to only being 30 hrs a week though and they demanded to know current boss's name and #.. I didn't know that-- I haven't changed jobs in a while ...if they didn't call you- they don't deserve YOU. Something even better is waiting out there for you.. you'll find it.. if this one doesn't pan out... best of luck to you. Remember everything happens for a reason.

Try to get "in their face" again. a thank you note for the interview, find a trade news article and send it to them with a note saying something like i thought you might be interested in reading this. do anything you can to bring your name to the forefront
