What would you do regarding this job situation?

I currently work for a law firm and enjoy it. The work itself sucks, but the people and the firm are great. There is a real possibility I can move up to become a legal assistant in about 1 year. In the future at some point, I'd like to go to law school and perhaps working here will give me some sort of insight into the goings on of a law firm. Another issue is that they seem to fire people persistently (large law firm), though I just started and don't expect that to happen to me yet. I work full time, paid $10 per hour.

However, my friend has set up an interview at this other place for me that will pay well, about $30,000 per year to start. The problem is, is that it is not in line with what I want to do for my future and I don't see myself moving up the ladder, so to speak. The way he describes it, it seems pretty demanding for certain things whereas the place I'm at now seems more relaxed.

Would you stick with the current job or go to the other where you don't see a future?

2B or not 2B
2B or not 2B

I can not tell you what I would do, since I do not know all of your circumstances or what you consider is 'demanding' out of the other job.

Demanding could mean either physically or mentally demanding, or it could also mean that there are a lot of deadlines to meet, or include a lot of traveling etc.

I think every job should be demanding in some way. I also believe that people should receive 'an honest days pay for an honest days work' (an old concept that my father taught me which sadly has been lost over the years).

I have always been more demanding of myself, than any of my employers ever were of me(except one tyrant). I also made much more money for my employers than my wages which was a symbiotic relationship, since we were both able to benefit from the relation.

I can only give you some guidance, and things to consider.

First of all, it will not hurt you to go for an interview with the prospective employer to find out more information, they may not even be interested in hiring you for some reason.

I have gone to interviews for other companies while still employed, and at least on one occasion that I remember, was accepted for the position because money being offered would have meant that I would not have to work two jobs to sort out my financial difficulties that I was facing at the time.

When I went back and told my supervisor,(who was a very good man) he had found a way to increase my weekly wages enough to help me through my financial burden.

That was back in 1974 and I had only been with the company for 18 months. I then stayed with the same multinational company for the next 12 years. Mutual respect goes a long way.

Secondly, 'moving up the ladder' is the way to go, especially when working for a large organization, but you need to 'stand out from the crowd' enough to be appreciated for advancement. The only way to do that is to take on extra tasks which may be outside of your 'job description' but is also something which you know you are capable of doing successfully. This will show your ambition, and may help to speed your advancement(although there is no guarantee). You also may have accept the old saying that 'No good deed deserves to go unpunished!' as happens many times.

Thirdly, ambition is a good thing but NEVER think or try to make yourself look better by trying to make a co-worker look bad. That is a sure way of getting you dismissed, and is morally not right anyway(however I don't think morals and law generally have much to do with each other).

If you are really interested in law as a career, it may be worth staying with your present job but if they have a reputation of firing employees is of some concern worth consideration.

In closing I would like to say that money is far less important than having a job that you enjoy and are content with.

I have always believed that money is simply a way of 'making ends meet' and I would rather make enough to do that and have less money doing a job that I enjoy rather than be paid more for one which I was miserable in.

I wish you the best, and we do not always make the right decisions in life (I know, otherwise I would have never married my first wife)!!!

Good Luck!
