What would I need to become a retail manager?
My community college offers a short (6 month) program to give a certificate in retail management. I'm also studying for an Associate's Degree in Applied Sciences, but that will take about 2 years to get.
Would I still have a good chance of getting a job as a manager with only a certificate, or would I only qualify to be an assistant manager?

You qualify to start as an assistant manager. You have to start from something, right? If it is a small shop, you can become a retail manager straight away, but that also isn't a well-payed job. Both of them bring experience, though. See what fits you best, and try to do it. You can look at http://www.retailmanagementjobs.org/ and see what positions for commercial retail management jobs they have on offer. |

Experience really is the killer in those jobs. Plenty of people with masters who don't have nice paying jobs. if you want a manager job in retail work like two years in retail and then apply for some manager positions in other stores, while also letting the retail store you work for know you want to be a manager. Most companies hire managers from within. |
