What to list for professional references?

I am applying for a job and on the application it asks for professional references. I am a college student and have not had an opportunity to make any professional references yet. I do very well in college and have gotten high honors every semester but I am the quiet type who does not really stand out. I doubt any of my professors would even know who I am otherwise I would use them as references (or is it still ok to use them?). What should I put in this field? Can I just use personal references of people that have known me for long periods of time? Any advice would help, thanks.

Professional references are the ones who help to showcase you and your abilities. While your family and friends love you and speak highly of you, theyre not the best professional references in fact. It is advised to go beyond this circle.

But, the question arises where to and whom to put. Since you are a fresh college graduate, one of the potential referees would be professors/teachers who have taught you. Though it seems that you are quiet type and does not interact much with them, they would be constantly observing all their students. You have to step up, request, and get approval/permission from them to be a professional reference. This will help them to know who you are and what you are going to do.

Apart from them, if you are active in some social organizations like clubs or sports or any religious organizations, you can approach them too. Normally persons in senior positions like managers, supervisors, coordinators, coach etc. would make best profession references. But, while choosing people for your professional references, you still need to make sure of a couple things.

First thing is that you make sure this referee has positive things to say about you. Always keep in mind, to tell the person in advance that you want to keep them as a reference and seek for their approval and permission. The third most important thing is to thank your references once your interview is over and you land into a job just dont ignore their contribution in obtaining your job.

You can simply send them a thank you note appreciating their time, consideration and contribution.

Good luck !!
