If they have time to talk to you (it's approaching lunch rush in most time zones now), show some interest in the job. Ask if there is a specific shift or station (guest service or back-of-house) that they are looking to fill. It never hurts to ask how the person's day is going, either.

If the store you are applying at is actively hiring, being nice and showing interest in working will make your application stick out in the manager's mind. I have seen this work more than once at my store.

The most important thing is not what you say, but how you seem. Certainly you should introduce yourself, give a firm handshake, smile, and look him in the eye. Tell him you came to hand in your application personally, and that you are really excited at the prospect of getting the job. Then ask when you might hear back from him regarding his decision.

Your friendly and eager demeanor will make you stand out from the crowd, which, as far as you know, may just be a faceless list of applications he has stacked up in his office. If your qualifications and skills match what they're looking for, a pleasant personality might be all that's needed to seal the deal.

Hope this helps, and best of luck with the job!
