What should I put for desired pay on job application?

The question on every job application : Desired Salary. What is the correct answer? Should I leave it blank, suggest that I am "open to negotiation"? Answer with what I feel I am worth, or what the job is worth? I don't know the right thing to put.

Someone told me to find out the company's pay range (for Target in Illinois), but I don't know that answer either. Thanks in advance!

OPEN - that should be the only thing you put, unless you have a current job and you are just looking for higher pay.

Never discuss salary or benefits until you are offered the job.

If you don't like what the offer is, negotiate or decline the job.

Job applications are usually hard - how should you complete them? Should you follow them up when there is no response? I suppose there's no one solution but the resource in the box below has some brilliant tips and tricks about this. I agree, put open or willing to negotiate, or will discuss. Dont look to talk about salary at the initial interview.

Negotiable. Or

Commensurate with my skills and experience. Or

Market rate. Or

Standard Target ranges.

It doesn't really matter. They won't reject you if you put too high a number or hire you if you put too low a number. They will hire you for you ability and personality.
