What salary should I ask for?
I am applying for a job that already has a salary range. The salary range is $41,000-$60,000/yr. It's an entry level job in DC. The announcement asks for salary requirements. My question is: with such a large salary range in the announcement, what desired salary should I put?

Here's he bottom line, if you ask for $41,000 you will only get 41K. If you ask for 60K you might get it but you might get 41K. So you have nothing to lose by requesting the top amount. Also, all future raises will likely be based on your current salary. i.e. 2%, 3% or 5% per year etc... so your starting point is important for years and years to come. Additionally this could play into promotion opportunities. If you are capped out in your salary range, but doing an outstanding job, and they want to keep you, they have to find a new position for you with greater compensation. That means promotion. If you are at 41K and are doing an outstanding job, they can just give you another 10K per year and feel pretty good about themselves. |

Depends on your experience. If you have none in that field, you ask for $41k. If you have extensive experience, then $60k. In order to ask for anything above $41k, you must be able to justify WHY they should pay you more than the $41k that the next guy in line is more than willing to accept. There is no negotiation if you have no leverage. |
