What kind of job could you get with an associates in American Sign Language?

I switched my major to American Sign Language. My goal is to be an interpreter. I've heard that you're encouraged to get your bachelors, but what kind of jobs could you get with an associates degree in ASL? Thanks.

HAHAHA an associates? really? you will be lucky if they read the rest of your resume after reading your highest level of an educational degree is your associates degree. i would highly recommend coming back to this question after getting your bachelors degree..

If your goal is to become an interpreter, the reason you are best off with a bachelors is because of certification. In 2012, to take the national certification test (NIC) through Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) you will be required to have a Bachelor's degree.

An Associate's in ASL will help you get any job that requires an Associate's. As to something specifically in the realm of deafness or ASL, I don't know of any. Get your Associate's, it's an accomplishment and a great step before obtaining your Bachelor's degree. Don't let anyone discourage you in your goals.

Hope I helped!

*ADDED* Ummm, yes there are minimum requirements from RID on education, this is copied and pasted directly from their website WITH the address after it:

IMPORTANT NOTE: Beginning June 30, 2009, hearing candidates for certification must have a minimum of an associates degree to take a performance exam. Deaf candidates must have a minimum of an associates degree after June 30, 2012.

If you became an interpreter, you could be:

Staff Interpreter

Work full time at a school, hospital, a court

system, clinic, or an agency with deaf and hard

of hearing employees.

Intake Specialist

Counselor Assistant

Job Coach

Free-lance Interpreter or Private Practice

Interpreting at churches, weddings, banquets,

seminars, jails, courts, police stations, legal

or psychiatric offices, conferences, meetings,

classes, government service agencies, job

trainings, job interviews, performances or

plays...etc.

Don't listen to what's-his-name's ignorant remarks; all that is required to take NIC (National Interpreter Certification) is two years of ASL, so you're perfect. (I read that on rid.org, I just can't remember where).

HOWEVER, if you are planning to take the test in 2012 or after, then , yes, you would have to have a bachelors (not necessarily in ASL--anything would do).

good luck!!
