What is the difference between being fired and being made redundant?

I have been laid off from work, because the company claim they are "over-staffed" and do not require me there anymore. Incidentally, is this legal?
I want to know if i've been fired or whether i've been made redundant. They claim I was fired. What?!

Redundant generally means that they have no job for you now, but it's not your fault and it does not mean you have done anything wrong. You should get a reasonable reference, I would hope. |

In my day you got fired for not doing your work properly, or misbehaving, & redundant was when there was not enough work , so some staff were laid off. |
