What is the best way for me to begin working towards a career as a talent agent?
I'm a current undergraduate at Yale University working towards a degree in Economics, possibly double majoring in Film Studies. I'm hoping to go to business school to get my MBA after graduation.
It is very likely that I will have to take the 2010/2011 school year off due to complicated circumstances. I live in Los Angeles, and I was wondering if any of you had advice on how to get an internship at a talent agency for the year (or for 6 months, or whatever I can do).
I want to get the most I can out of this year off, and I hope that such an internship would give me valuable connections in the business (Hell, maybe even a job immediately after graduation?). Is it possible to simply drive to different agencies, submit a resume and ask for some low-level, mailroom position? Or is the only way to apply for these sorts of things through the internet? I've been searching around and it seems like the only sites offering applications to internships at talent agencies charge fees to submit your application. Is this the only way?

Unless you're well connected (like your uncle or dad is a major producer or director), you need to get an internship at a legit respected agency through a college program. That is the basically the only way they do it, and the programs are structured, and you must meet certain qualifications, like a GPA requirement. The agent training programs generally only admit college grads, often only those who have graduate degrees in business or law, or another appropriate grad degree. Mailroom jobs are not easy to get, everyone wants one (including Harvard grads), same with the other low level jobs, like script reader. But contact every agency there is and give it a shot. (This is how it is all over the entertainment industry.) |
