What is a good Future Career?

Category: Other

I'm one year away from choosing my AS levels and am pretty sure that I will take Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry. I enjoy these subjects and am very good compared to others in my class. I also believe that they will benefit when looking for a job in the future.

However, I also like the Arts, being very good at art and music, but didn't take these because they are "mickey mouse" subjects.

This has led me to being unsure as to what future job I should go for. An original idea was to make a load of money with a Science Degree and then retire early and do my Arts, but I am just unsure as to what I should do.

What is a good Future Career then?

First of all, I don't regard art and music as "mickey mouse" subjects. They are traditional subjects, and just because they are not scientific does not mean they are any worse than your choices. Things like Leisure and Media are "mickey mouse" subjects but art and music are not. Taking both art and music might be a bit much if you want a scientific career but you could easily afford to take one of them. Music in particular pairs very well with Maths. If I were you I would do Maths, Physics and Chemistry to prepare you for a science course, and then do Music just for the love of it and because learning shouldn't just be about what career it will lead to.

With those A Levels you could do engineering, medicine or vetinary science, as long as you are likely to come out with good grades. All of those careers would allow you to make a lot of money. Another option is architecture as that is both scientific and arty - art A Level would be useful for that.

The most important thing I can say is - only go into a scientific career if it will genuinely interest you. Money alone is not a good enough reason to go into a job. I am a teacher which is not the best paid job in the world but I wake up every morning and am happy to go to work - there is a lot to be said for that.

Finally - at your age you do not have to make any big decisions. If you change your mind about yout future later on you will find a way to make it happen. Good luck!
