Finding the right career that suits your personality isn't the most easiest thing to do. Its going to take a long time, a lifelong experience.

As many have already mentioned, the first step to figure out which field might suit you is to understand your likes and dislikes and your personality traits. Skill assessment tests are available online for free, so you should do some research (Google engine is my fav. for research)

After figuring out what you might want to pursue or are you interests are, try taking some classes in that general field.

You shouldn't think of college as a waste of time just because you don't know what to do. Its actually the perfect place to figure out what you want to do with your career. You surrounded by peers who are all in the same position, trying to figure out what they want to do with their lives.

First two years of college is GE (general courses). You want to take as many different classes within these two years in different fields to see what you like and don't like. For example, I enjoyed history, english, art history, psychology but could not stand math, science, and political science.

You would then decide what field you want to pursue after the first two years in college.

Also try applying for volunteer work and internship in interested fields. Try to imagine yourself doing that work and see if its a good fit for you. Its a good way to invaluable life experience.

You should also look for work related to the field you are interested in pursuing after figuring out what you want to do with your life.

The road to your life's work is going to take a long time, take it one step at a time and don't feel like you have to figure everything out right now.

You can do anything you put your mind too, so stop stressing so much~

Good luck =D

No matter what pathway you choose there will times when it will get hard, boring or you will see it wasn't everything you wanted it to be. If you keep searching for your perfect vocation you will never find it. Ask yourself what will give you the most satisfaction over time. Work isn't supposed to make you happy, success is.

Everyone will fall into their particular niche....you may change your path a bit, but will ultimately end up on the same destined path. Just do what feels right. When something or someone wants you to do a thing, it doesn't really matter whether or not you are ready for it....it will happen naturally.

Hopes this helps.

First, get serious about college. Sign up for a full semester of classes at your local community college - take the basics (english, math, science, history, etc.). No matter what, almost ALL majors are going to require the same core courses, so there is no need to putz around taking a course here or there while you figure life out.

Sit down with an academic adviser and try to map out your first two semesters using only core courses. Hopefully, by the end of your second semester, you will begin to lean towards something. If not, ask if the college has any aptitude tests they can administer - these will indicate in general what your interests are.

Taking random courses, playing everything by ear and working odd jobs is probably not the most conducive means for plotting a life source. You should become more systematic about the search for a career.

Young man, you are not grown, and have plenty of time to find your passion, get an education and work on a career. At 21, you are still a youngster (unless you've been to war). Pursue jobs that interest you, keep them at least a year or two, read a lot to see what the world has to offer and educate yourself until you are ready to get a formal education or you find a path. Chin up.

You're really not that old. If I were you, I would start taking general classes at a community college (many community colleges even allow you to earn a 2-year degree in "general studies") and then you can transfer to a 4-year university. Of course, there are very good careers that you can make for yourself out of a 2-year degree (for instance, barber/cosmetologist, mechanic, veterinary assistant, dental assistant, massage therapist, etc). You can get financial aid, but community colleges are usually inexpensive, already. Good luck!

As far as college - take general classes for now that you would need for any field.

Try to brainstorm ideas by making a list of all the things you enjoy including hobbies, and what you like to do in your spare time. When you write out this list, don't think about careers for the time being - just jot down anything you think of. Then use this list to see if different occupations will fit in with your personality, likes and dislikes. For example: if most of your interests are solitary like reading and being alone, then you wouldn't like a field with a lot of customer contact.

Also try some career assessment tests which are available for free with the major job boards. See the link below for a website page which includes more info on this topic.

You still have plenty of time to figure it all out - and the good news is you don't have to stick with any one career. It is perfectly okay to change careers at any age! so go ahead and try out a few by doing some research, volunteer work if possible, and talking to people currently in some of your fields of interest. If you don't know anyone - call a company and ask for an informational interview with a manager. Tell them that you are not applying for a job, but are just seeking information about a future career with their company since you are still in college. It never hurts to ask - if they say no then call another one.
