I forgot to ask when the interviewers were going to make a hiring decision at the interview. Is it appropriate to call them up to ask them the question the day after the interview?

I suggest you wait another day or so to allow them time to make some decisions. Then call and thank them for the interview, let them know you are very interested in the job, say you would be of benefit to them, and say "while I have you on the phone I have a question or two, including the one you forgot. I wouldn't call them just to ask one question. And definitely don't tell them you "forgot" to ask. Good Luck!

More then appropriate......if nothing else it will show the employer that you have a valiant intrest in the job as well as let them know you will not be waiting on their call. Shows initiative

Yes! I would ask them or else you will be in my position aka sitting by the phone waiting for them to call.
