What exactly does a social worker do? Could anyone give me a job description?

I'm curious...trying to decide career-wise what I wanna do....

Social workers are professionals whose goal is to bring about social justice, social change. They help people to self determine their lives. So a social workers role might be to research the ways in which social services are provided, how we can better these services, how many people access these services etc. they are also the ones who coordinate the services provided and help to deign policies surrounding social welfare.

They can work for government organisations or for NGOs (Non government organisations) You can also provide higher education by becoming a tutor or lecturer within the social work discipline.

Social work is a varying position as you can work with foster carers, with homeless, with women, with the disabled, with international aide groups etc. Any group that is disempowered would need a social work service. An example of a social worker position (Australia) is a manager of a team whose job it is to search for and approve foster carers. This includes recruitment seminars, information sessions for potential carers, organising and supervising training sessions, relaying or dealing with complaints about the recruitment process, cooperating with other faster care zones, coordinating visitation with parents etc etc.

It can be a very high demand job, with many sad stories and depressing situations. That being said it can be very fulfilling and empowering. and usually like most jobs when you start out you get the messy gritty jobs till you earn your place (though not all cases)
