What does the average person submit with their application?
So, yesterday I went in to pick up an application for the company I really want to work for. I was in luck and the manager was there and I got to talk to her for a few minutes. She asked me to fill out their "personality assesement", but it was about an hour before closing and she had customers so I offered to bring it back tomorrow with a copy of my resume and do the assessment then. Her eyes really lit up. I then told her a bit about myself, she asked me my name again, I asked her when she would be in tomorrow and we parted ways.
Today I went in with
A) Their 2 page application/background check form
B) A supplemental page to the application with the rest of my job history (which the fine print on their application asks for if it doesn't all fit)
C) A cover letter directed at their company addressed to her
D) An updated copy of my resume
E) A reference sheet with both professional & educational references
(C-E all on resume-grade paper)
Her expression made it appear as though she was impressed that I had put this all together for her. After I had filled out her assessment she asked me to call her if I didn't hear anything from her & I told her I was going to be out of town for work & a volunteer commitment for a few weeks and I'd check back with her at the beginning of next month.
Do most people really just fill out the application these days and that's it?
I'd think that people would want to go above and beyond and try to impress these managers to show that they're serious about wanting the job.

A lot of times it makes you seem waaaaay too desperate to get the job, and all of the employees and managers just make fun of you as soon as you leave... at least in the case of retail/fastfood. It makes them think you're self-important and expect to be "promoted" and "given raises" all the time (something the very very very rarely happens in the retail/fastfood world). It also makes it look like you're "too good" to work there and that you'll quit as soon as you find a job that meets your standards. |
