What does it do for my ability to get another job if I quit?

I'm sixteen working at my mom's company for the summer, when I go back to school I'll have to get a regualr part time job at retail or somewhere. My mother informs me that I'll be working here next summer again, so I'll have to quit whatever job I have. When fall comes around again, will places turn be down because I quit my former job?

Aagh! Mom doesn't seem to have your best interests in mind. Some family businesses, like farms, need the entire family to pitch in at certain times, but it doesn't sound as if that's your mother's kind of business. You're not really an indentured servant that she can order around.

Most likely when you apply to the next job in the fall of 2011 your employer will say, "Hmm, she left her last job to help her mother and I bet she'll do that again in the summer of 2012. If I have another applicant I can count on to work through the summer, I prefer that applicant."

Here's what you might want to consider:

Find a good job in the fall. If you don't like it, you might want to quit anyway next summer. If you do like it you might say to your mother, "This job pays me more and it's a better fit for my eventual career in" whatever the business you're working in--nobody expects 17-year-olds to know for sure what they want to do.

"Mom, can I help you find another worker for that summer job?"
