What do I upload when a Job Site says to upload your resume?

As I am applying for positions online (new to me), I see many sites that say Upload or Paste your Resume. This is fine. But my question is what about my cover letter that I wrote for the position? When they ask for a resume should I also include my Cover Letter too? Do I put paste that before my Resume and upload only one file or paste one large entry? I applied to one job this morning and it said to paste the resume and so I did. Only the resume as it asked. But then it was over and it thanked me for the submission. So I went at it again and this time posted both as one large "paste". I hope I didn't mess up my chances but I wasn't sure what the right thing to do is. Any guidance will be appreciated. Thank you.

Different companies have different applicant-tracking systems. If the online application asks for a resume, just give them a resume. If the applicant tracking system have a cover letter option, then you can upload or paste your cover letter along with your resume. It's good to send both resume and cover letter together when applying, but some companies are more particular and want applicants to apply in specific way, format etc. |

If you use CareerBuilder it has an "upload" box for the resume, then a checkbox right below that that says "Include Cover Letter", and if you check that box before submitting, it opens a big box where you copy and paste your cover letter. |
