What do I do when applying for another job when I have one?

I'm soon to graduate (BA) and I have a guaranteed position at the museum which I've worked at since my first year. However, it's a guaranteed part-time position only and I have been recently contacted about another job, which would be full-time. What is the right etiquette for this?

I haven't interviewed for the other job yet as a coordinator in development, but I don't even know if I should in case it creates a bad rap for me at the museum...

What should I do?

You should accept the position if you are offered and if time allows and you can work the museum as a part time position.

If you are going to quit, give them a minimum of two weeks notice so you don't burn your bridges and can always return to work for them in the future.

You have to look out for what is best for you.

This happens a lot, and every organization understands that individuals must put their own careers before not-wanting-to-disappoint. go ahead & interview for the full-time job, but keep it all under the table to prevent causing a fuss in case you don't actually get the job. if you do get the job, congratulations! it will be great to have a full-time job instead of a part-time one, and you can explain to the museum that you really needed the other job for financial reasons. they'll definitely get over it - everyone's looking to get a job these days.

I would give the museum a two week notice just like mentioned before not to make any enemies. Congratulations on getting a degree. I would say that the museum would understand that you are not leaving them because of the work environment it is just because you need to find full time employment with better wages and benefits. You were bettering yourself when you were attending college and hopefully they saw that and have no hard feelings about your departure. When you do get that other job just keep in touch with them later and maybe go out to the cafe for coffee. Just keep in touch with them, maybe they network for you later on down the road.
