What career should I choose?

Category: Other

J CCJ CC

I want to narrow down my options. I had over 10 careers and I have narrowed it down to 5. I want a career that the average person is likely to have for a living. Also, tell me the advantages and disadvantages of the careers. These are the careers:

¢ Journalist

¢ Creative Writer

¢ Photographer

¢ Proofreader

¢ Editor

By the way, I am very good at English and I get fantastic grades for it. Also, what are the dangers (if any) of each of these careers?

Thanks!

When choosing a career, I would suggest you may try to take a few criteria into consideration.

1) Interest

Do you have interest in that particular career? Or you purely think it is a lucrative career, that's why it is worth considering? For example, I like to explore new things, careers that constrain myself to a certain routine tasks won't trigger my passion. If I were you, from your list of options, I would prefer creative writer than proofreader.

2) Strength

What are your strengths? As you mentioned, having good command of English is one of your strengths. By looking at your list, all careers except for photographer will fulfill your strengths. Most people like something that they are more well-versed in. I have the same feeling, but I am not sure about your stance.

3) Personality

Some people are more outgoing, some are more introverted. People with outgoing character may prefer careers like journalist and photographer. People who are more introverted may prefer job like proofreader.

4) Values of Career

Some people will be more contented when they involve in a career that can bring broader good values to the society. For example, as an editor, you are the one who has almost full control on the contents of your magazine or book. You may find yourself more satisfied with this position than someone who has a routine job like proofreader.

5) Market Demand

Sometimes, we have to be realistic as well. If you are interested in a certain field that seems to have an extremely low demand in the market. Then, you may end up with a situation of not able to find a relevant job. Unless you are willing to move yourself to other countries or states that have a higher market demand in that particular career that you like despite its low demand at your own area.

From the 5 criteria above, obviously I do not provide any clear and precise option for you. As an outsider, I have no right to suggest you any particular option. If I were you, I will make a list which consists of the column of 'Interest', 'Strength', 'Personality', 'Values of Career' & 'Market Demand'. Then write down your own preference and details at each column. The career from your list of 5 that can fulfill each of your detail in each column will be the most suitable career for you. You may test it out! But NO GUARANTEE! All the best in your future career!
