What are the best ways to become organised?

I have really bad organisational skills. I forget to do things and have no system to organise events coming up and what I need to be prioritising on.

What are you best tips on being organised? What stationary/tools do you use to be organised?

Fortunately, there are office supply stores full of organizational tools.

You need to get a Day Timer or Day planner, some have different sections that can be added separately if you need help in a certain area. Basically they should have a monthly calendar, with individual days broken down with more space to elaborate on your schedule. It should also have a directory A-Z with an area for name, address, telephone numbers of contacts. Also, a notepad where you can jot down additional notes to yourself as needed.

You can get sections that have expense record keeping, reservations made, a shopping list for food, office supplies, clothing, etc., and any number of areas that you need to help you set priorities for your busy day.

You can get different colored tape tabs that can mark just about anything from articles to be read to basic business info you need to checkout.

If you have a pretty busy schedule like most people do these days, colored highlighters are great for expounding on your schedule.(i.e. green could be for your daily workout, pink for lunch or dinner dates, yellow for leisure activities with friends, blue for family events, orange for doctor's appts., etc.)

You can purchase computer software or cellphones that have activity schedules that can send you reminders.

I travel with a mini-office in my trunk to cover all of the work, church, family/friends, personal items that I need to keep track of. And really just a small box with colored folders, some pens and pencils, highlighters, legal pads, and a good sized calendar, can work wonders.

Best of luck in finding your inner efficiency expert !

Make notes in your cell phone or cell phone calender. Write down notes on sticky notes by your desk and stick them to your computer or fridge so you'll always look at them and remember.

Good luck :D

Well, I was kinda looking for more help, cos i'm the same. All I know is that at work I have the reputation of being really organised, my big secret is that I am not (at all) .If you can make it LOOK as though you're organised that's half the battle won !

I am not fantastic myself at organising things, but I have certainly improved.

Rule 1- Keep it Simple. Use one source to store everything, lists, reminders, contact etc.so you are not forever updating Information here there and everywhere .

As I use a computer for a lot of what I do, I have an electronic organiser which has sections just like a manual one. I create a to do list with timescales and alarm reminders so providing I have my computer switched on, it pops up on the screen to remind me what I should be doing, I have all my birthdays and special anniversaries listed with reminders on pay days previous to remind me to buy presents and cards in plenty of time.

Rule 2 -Prioritise

As for company events - work backwards from the deadline, plan in time for things to go wrong eg, letters not being received on time. spare invites, think about all the things that could go wrong and factor these in, I am not saying that they will but you need to have a back up plan.

caterers, location, guests, presentation, prices etc.

Try and group similar things together - calls, research, follow up for responses updates etc.

Try to structure your day.

See if you can delegate work to another to assist you.

Rule 3- Don't forget to thank the help.
