What's your advice for me?

I'm about to graduate college with a B.A in Sociology. My problem is I did not learn anything in college, despite being a B student most of the time. I found Sociology to be a waste and it did not prepare me for anything. Between an empty degree and a light resume, I'm feeling more than a little anxious about things.

Why did you waste your time and money getting a degree instead of an education?

Okay, so you pi$$ed away 4 years of life and money- get over it and do the following:

1) Sit down and figure out what skills you have. Look at extracurricular activities, jobs you had in the past, etc. Look at the SKILLS you used in these jobs.

2) Sell yourself as someone who as these SKILLS instead of some tool that wasted time in college.

3) Employers are looking for people who show they can DO things. The 4.0 Physics major who cannot look you in the eye when talking or cannot write well is useless in the majority of the real world. As a manager, I don't look to hire great students, I look to hire people who have the skills I need AND a record of using these skills.

4) Don't sweat it. Most first and second jobs suck because you usually don't know what you want to do yet.

If you can, go back to school and get a better degree. If you can't get a job were you have to work with people. Counsellor, youth worker, secretary all involve working with people.

Hello.I know I am in no position to tell you what you should do.however,I can share some real life examples with you.many of my friends are very successful career wise.but very FEW of them are really doing what they majored in college.like one of them was doing French in college, but now he is running a corporation in Hong Kong, which has nothing to do with what he learned.

so,there will always be a way for you to take.

all you need to do now is stay alone for a while and ask yourself what you really want to do.

I wish you good luck and a happy life !

I wonder if there was a career you had in mind when you started college. Have you since ruled that out? Actually, in many jobs that require a degree the employer isn't really looking for a particular degree as much as they're looking for proof that you can start something and finish it. I expect your light resume will be excused for your having just graduated, so you can set that worry aside.

You could probably sort of start from scratch and begin looking through the classifieds. Identify a few positions that look interesting to you and set up interviews. On any interview always ask for a copy of the job description. If nothing else you'll have an opportunity to discover what those positions entail, and you can polish your interview skills.

Be prepared to be offered jobs that you really don't want and have a response prepared for that. Always look and act like a professional, even if you're interviewing for a job that isn't. As I said, at the very least this will give you some ideas about whether you'd be best served to consider another field and pursue a master's degree.

Best of luck to you ... and don't forget - it's summer - have some fun, too!
