Beautiful DisasterBeautiful Disaster

I work at this company as an office clerk, I been working there for almost two years. About a year ago I noticed that the vice president of the company is racist and treats people like crap, including me. He calls all African American people "SPOOKS", and he calls all Hispanic people "JULIOS". He has a board on the wall that he calls "HIS WALL OF SHAME". On that wall he has a cut out of the cream of wheat box man which happens to be African American and he wrote next it, "PRESIDENT ELECT". He also has a picture of a girl in a thong and you can totally see her butt. This man feels no remorse and inflicts pain on others. The worse part of all is that the owner of the company lets him get away with it. We have spoken to her about the situation and basically told us that we need to change and make him happy. I am really tired of being treated like crap and I want to take action. How should I handle this problem?

First step is to file a claim with the EEOC, give specific details (photo's on the wall, comments) with as much detail as you can. May 1st at 1pm said this, April 25th spoke to owner asked that photo's be taken down, etc. Try to keep it specific and to the point and keep personal opinions out of it. What he's doing is wrong, no doubt, but try to keep this in line so it will stick. They will do an investigation and either give you a letter to go get an attorney and sue or close it and find nothing wrong. (Which should not be the case)

But as others have stated, be ready to leave the company following all of this as it will not be a place comfortable for you to continue working there.

Quit. If the president of the company does not want to take action, then quit.

If you're not joking, then document the hell out of it, preferably with photos or video, then cut loose and hire the best attorney possible. If ANY of that is true, most of them would likely even take your case without money upfront.

So the owner of the company allows this person to act in this way? You could find another job, in the mean time log everything down in a book with time, date, the comment that was made what you saw and this is the important bit: don't tell anyone you're doing it. Then allow the comments build up and make a formal complaint against the vice president stating the times, dates and comments that you've logged in your book. However do not hand over the book, make a photocopy of it and stash the original book somewhere safe.

If the president doesn't take action, contemplate seeking a lawyer and taking the company to court. It's all about following the correct procedure. So follow the company's complaint procedure to the letter, crossing all the T's and dotting all the i's so if you do end up in court, you've followed correct procedure.

You should talk to a lawyer before doing anything more. Unfortunately, you will probably not be able to stay with the company once you take additional action. You will need to prove that this is happening and that you went to the owner, but as I said, talk to a lawyer first. You don't want to violate any wiretapping laws by recording conversations in states that don't allow it.

If you don't feel good about your job and environment then better to quit from job and have a better one in your hand.
